November  Messages
Peace Message: Kindness and Gratitude
Brain Message: We Love a Challenge!

Report Cards
A reminder about Report Cards:
Student report cards are available online only in the PowerSchool Parent Access Portal.  To access your child's report card online, log into the PowerSchool Parent Portal and you will see a Report Cards icon in the left hand pane.  When you click on this icon your child's report card will appear on the screen.  You can scroll to see the entire report card and choose to print it, if you'd like.  Anytime you click on the Report Cards icon, the most recent report card will generate.  Quarter 1 report cards will be available to view on Thursday, November 9th at 2:30 PM.

From the Counselor's Desk...
This month, we will build upon last month's themes of responsibility and being a bully-free school of Upstanders.  The Peace Message for the month is Kindness and Gratitude.  The students will learn that Kindness and Gratitude are the “cures” for bullying and unkind behavior.  To reinforce our Peace Message and in conjunction with World Kindness Day on November 13, students will be encouraged each morning to perform a Kindness Challenge.  The Challenge will give them an opportunity to experience the joy of giving and acting in kind ways.  We hope they will discover the “magic” of kindness as it gives both, the giver and receiver, positive feelings, and it can create a climate of harmony, happiness and peace.  Students will learn that “It's COOL to be kind.”  Some Kindness Challenges are: say “good morning” to someone new, pick up your toys at home, smile at 10 people throughout the day, invite someone new to play, let someone get in front of you in line, thank the adults at school and home that care for you, and give a sparkle (compliment) to 5 people.

Our Brain Message for November is: We Love A Challenge! Students will learn that challenges make our brains grow. Scientists have found that neurons connect and grow when we do hard and new things, even when we fail. On the other hand, if we only do familiar things that are easy for us, our brains get lazy.  By looking for challenges and learning from our mistakes, we can move toward reaching our potential.

Holiday Greeting Card Collection
For the second year in a row, we have decided to facilitate a Holiday Greeting Card Collection.  The goal is to spread Kindness and Gratitude to those who have served our country and who are currently at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.  We will be assisting some service members and veterans by giving them the gift of writing this holiday season by mailing bundles of blank holiday cards so they can send them to their friends and loved ones.

If you would like to participate in this great cause, it’s very simple!  All you need to do is bring in a blank holiday card (no glitter, please) with a blank, but stamped envelope. If you would like to send in more than one card, that would be wonderful. Cards will need to be in
on or before Friday, November 17th.
Thank you for considering this worthwhile opportunity.

Holiday Help
The holiday season is approaching and the excitement is building, as we look forward to happy celebrations with family and friends. This is a busy time for many of us, and children can sometimes become overwhelmed. Eating a healthy diet, getting extra sleep and having some quiet time may help your child to stay healthier.

We recognize that holiday anticipation may not be joyful for all students and families, and instead brings stress, fear and even sadness.  As always, our school community is here to assist you, if needed.   Please let us know if you are in need of assistance.  Through the generous donations of others in our school community, we can help.  If you know someone that may be having difficulty, please encourage them to let us know.  All assistance is confidentially given.  We hope that all Memorial children who celebrate this time of year can experience wonderful memories to share with friends and family.

For those families who would like to help support us during this time of the year, we truly appreciate your generosity.  What a wonderful gift you are teaching your own children!  Donations may be sent into the nurse’s office.
