Memorial Day Remembrance
We had a beautiful morning to be outside with everyone paying tribute to some of our Bedford veterans buried at the St. Hedwig Cemetery. After placing flags in the ground our students gathered to sing Proud to be an American, by Lee Greenwood.

We reminded our students that our school was named by the town of Bedford to pay tribute to all the soldiers who lost their lives during time of war.
It was a very nice remembrance and our students did a fantastic job.

Please click here to see some pictures and to watch the video.

Now Accepting Bedford School District “HALL of FAME” Nominations
The Bedford School District has been recognized as one of the most exceptional school districts in the state. This recognition and distinction would not be possible without the many citizens, educators, students and volunteers that over the years have built, maintained and enhanced the mission and the values of our school district. We invite you to nominate individuals who exemplify the spirit of our district along with those who have gone above and beyond in making Bedford an extraordinary school district in all aspects. Please go to the Bedford Hall of Fame link here found on the BHS homepage for details and nominate someone who should be recognized for their contributions! Nominations for this year’s class will be accepted through July 15, 2018.

Our inaugural class 2017 included:
  • William Greiner
  • Dennis Pope
  • Ann Remus
  • Tim Mayes
  • William Whitmore
  • Susan Mullen

Tick Management
Now that spring has really arrived, our students are spending more time outside - both at home and at school. Mostly that is a great thing. At the same time, we need to be thinking about safety.

In particular, I am writing to you about tick management. Here are a few items I want to share with the community on the subject.
The most effective measure for limiting ticks on our property is keeping grass cut short and removing leaf litter since that is where they prefer to live.

We are also providing selective tick treatments on district properties based on recommendations from our pest services contractor. This is the same approach the town of Bedford is using for sports fields.

Families can find additional recommendations for tick bite prevention and treatment in this excellent New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Resources notice.

Of course no approach will eliminate every potential risk. That is why we ask families to help. Please remind your children to avoid tick-infested areas such as overgrown grass, brush, and leaf litter, to use an insect repellent when spending time outdoors, and to do daily tick checks after being outdoors.

As always, thank you for trusting us with the care of your children.

Sincerely,
Chip McGee, Superintendent of Schools

Bicentennial Essay Contest

The NH State House hosted a statewide Essay Contest that asked students write about the NH Statehouse and its meaning today. We are very proud to have 2 of our Memorial students recognized as the top 2 finishers in the South Central Region. Congratulations to Madeline Cole who finished 2nd and Colin McCarthy who finished 1st. Those essays were then submitted to the state where Colin finished in second place at the state level. He was recognized at a ceremony with the Governor on Wednesday at the Statehouse. Excellent job by both of our 4th graders.

Peace Message: Patience
Brain Message: A Goal Without a Plan is Just a Wish

From the Counselor’s Desk
This month, students will learn that many things in life require patience. Whether it be waiting for our turn, waiting to speak or waiting for something to happen, we need to understand that we can’t always get what we want right away. In today’s world of technology and instant gratification, children are less apt to have the skill of patience and waiting. Children without patience and the ability to wait have greater difficulty powering through difficult tasks. Patience is therefore linked with last month’s message about perseverance, since not giving up requires us to be patient and wait for the results. We can teach patience to children by regularly creating situations where they have to wait. Through practice, the important life skill of patience can be developed.

To further our lessons on growth mindset, the students will learn that setting goals alone does not enable us to achieve them. Instead, we must have a plan on how we are going to reach our goal, work hard and change the plan when needed. As our Brain Message expresses, without a plan of action, our goals are only wishes.

Grandparents Day
On May 10th our school will be filled with joy as our children's grandparents and senior citizen friends come to visit. A special time is planned that will include light refreshments and a choral performance by Memorial 3rd/4th grade chorus.

Guests will also have a classroom visit and a tour of the school.
