Principals' Notes - April 1st

Dear Memorial Families,
We hope that you will stop by the Book Fair next week. It is a great time to buy books for summer vacation. It is so much fun to watch how excited the children are about looking at and choosing books they would like to read.

Word of the Month: Optimism
April 1: Introduction to the word for April: Optimism. Recent studies have shown that teaching optimism to children can enable them to perform better in school, have an overall more positive view toward adversity, have better coping skills, are less often bullied, and are 50% less likely to suffer from teenage depression. Research has also found optimism to have a positive effect on overall health, including an increased life span, and a greater resistance to the common cold.  ((Trinity College School of Education, Dublin, Ireland; Mayo Clinic; American Academy of Pediatrics, 2011.)  We will define optimism as “looking for things to be happy about, even when it might not be a great day”.

Week of April 4:
April 5: Phrase of the Day:  “Attitude is the little thing that makes a big difference.”  Being an optimist with a positive attitude can make our lives better.
April 8: Phrase of the Day: “Don't let a bad attitude rule your day.”  If our days starts off not so well, a negative attitude can make our whole day bad.  If we are optimistic and think of the good things, we have a better chance of turning our day around to something good.

Social Media: A Predator’s Playground
The Bedford Police Department and The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force will be presenting "Social Media: A Predator's Playground" to the community on Monday April 4th, 6:30-8:30PM in the BHS Theater.  The presentation will explain the dangers teens face today. Discussions about how various forms of electronic communications (computer, phones, gaming systems, etc.) can put families at risk will be covered.  This presentation is specifically geared towards parents and educators who are looking to better understand technology available to teens today and the way in which child predators use it to exploit them.
Community Presentation:

Important Announcement-  Online Report Cards for Quarter 3
We are excited to announce that beginning this quarter, we will be publishing student report cards online in the PowerSchool Parent Access Portal.  As a district, we are continuously working to improve efficiency, reduce costs and provide more timely reporting to parents.
For quarter 3, parents will receive a printed hard copy of the report card in addition to online access to the report card. The final quarter 4 report card will be published online only. You will notice that the report card format has changed. The new improved design has been simplified and you will be able to print a copy of the report card directly from the PowerSchool Parent Portal.
If you do not already have a PowerSchool Parent Portal account, we urge you to create one as soon as possible. If you already have an account, no further action is required. A letter will be sent home in the near future that provides the information needed to create your PowerSchool account and link your account to your child. Once your account is setup, you will continue to use this same account each year to access your child’s information.

BHS Senior Project
Hello, my name is Maryam Abdi. I am a senior at Bedford High School. My Senior Project deals with children, and how media affects children’s lives. I would like to ask parents with children from grades one, two and three if they would fill out the following survey about their children's media habits. I am doing this survey so I can compare a small sample of students from the Bedford School District to a larger survey that was taken from my research. Thank you for reading this.
