Dear Memorial Families,
We certainly have been indoors more than the children like this week … it has been way too windy. We have had a busy week with the Drum Lady, the Monarch Players and our annual Spelling Bee. Congratulations to Sunny Kovvuri for being Memorial’s Spelling Bee Champion and to runner-up Ryan O’Connor. Sunny will represent Memorial at the State Spelling Bee on February 27th.
Week of January 19:
Jan. 19: Phrase of the Day: “You are valuable. Don't let anyone make you feel differently.” Babe Didrikson Zaharias was a famous athlete whose differences made her special. If someone makes fun of you because you are different in some way, remind yourself that your differences are what make you special. Don't let others keep you from believing you are valuable.
Jan. 22: Phrase of the Day: “Each one, teach one.” Each of us is good at some things and not very good at other things. We can learn from each other by teaching our strengths to others and having others teach their strengths to us. This sharing of strengths is yet another reason why being different is great!
School Board Meeting - Monday, January 25th
The School Board will be holding its monthly meeting on Monday, January 25th at Memorial School at 7:00 pm. Memorial will showcase this year’s Artist’s in Residence Program at the start of the meeting.
Deliberative Session Feb. 2 at 7:00 p.m. BHS Theater
All voters in Bedford are urged to come to the Bedford School District Deliberative Session on Tuesday, February 2 at 7:00 p.m. at the Bedford High School Theater. This is when the community either affirms or revises the School Board’s proposed budget for 2016-17 (The budget is presented in the School District Warrant.). The proposed budget is $68.3M, a 3.9% increase over this year. The increase is primarily because of personnel, health insurance benefits, and significant building maintenance.
Voting on the warrant is on Tuesday, March 8 from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m
at the Bedford High School gymnasium. If the proposed budget is voted down, the default budget would be $2.3M lower. Additional information can be found here.
Artist in Residence - Friday, January 22nd
We have had a very fun-filled week with the Drum Lady, Anne Poirier… just ask the students. It was a joy seeing all of the students participating. The third and fourth graders performed for the first and second graders as well as to their parents today. They did an awesome job! Anne used stability balls, round laundry baskets, and drumsticks to teach students rhythm sequences and eventually added music and movement. It has been a rich experience integrating of music and physical education.
Bingo Night - February 11th
Memorial will be hosting our second annual Bingo Night on Thursday, February 11th. We are looking for donations of board games for that night. Children loved being able to win a board game.
Monarchs Against Bullying
Players from the Monarch’s team read to our first and second graders on Thursday afternoon … the children were a great audience and they were excited about getting autographs from the players.
