Principal’s Notes

October is here and everyone in well into the swing of school.  For a short week it certainly seemed like a busy one.  I hope you all find time to enjoy this long weekend.

October  Messages
Peace Message: Responsibility and being Bully Free
Brain Message: My Brain is like a Muscle that Grows

From the Counselor's Desk...
October is National Bully Free (Safe Schools) Month.  The Words of the Month are Responsibility and Being Bully Free, because it the responsibility of everyone in the school to help keep bullying and unkind behavior from happening.  At the elementary level, kids often call unkind behavior “bullying.”  Usually at this young age however, unkind behavior occurs when kids try to solve a problem and choose an inappropriate response, rather than a deliberate act to bully others.  If we let unkind behavior go without stopping it, we create a climate that tolerates unkindness, where kids can “grow into bullies.”  Instead, we need to stand up to unkind behavior before it becomes bullying.  Throughout the month, students will learn what they can do to stop unkind behavior, before it “grows” into bullying. If students are the targets of unkind behavior, they can tell the person to stop, walk away, or pretend they don’t hear the unkind words (Ignore).  If a student sees others being targeted, he/she can become an “Upstander”.  He/she can use the same strategies above, usher the targeted student away and ask if he/she is okay, or even ask the student to play.  Students are instructed to go to an adult right away if something is scary or dangerous, or when they have tried unsuccessfully to stop unkindness.

Brain Message for October: My Brain Is Like A Muscle That Grows. This month, students will continue to learn the neuroscience of a growth mindset.  Scientists have discovered that our brains can grow and change, depending on what we do.  When we engage in challenging tasks, keep trying, and learn from our mistakes and failures, we cause the neurons in our brains to connect and grow.  When neurons connect and grow, our brains become stronger and we become smarter.  Current research strongly supports the multiple academic, social and emotional benefits of teaching students how the brain functions and learns.  By understanding that the brain can grow, students are more likely to embrace their potential as learners, and can become more successful in school.

Sample a Smoothie Day!
We will be offering samples of a Fresh Fruit Smoothie for our students in the Memorial cafeteria during lunches on October 30th. Please note on the menu calendar it states that is will be offered on the 31st, but we felt with that being Halloween, there may be lots of other fun activities going on, so we are officially changing it to that Monday the 30th. Talk to your students about the offering. It will be samples only and any student in the cafe can come up and try one. I have listed the ingredients below, in case there are any questions of allergies.
