NEW NEWS

Guidance Message
Week of January 23:
Jan. 25: Phrase of the Day: “No two flowers bloom in exactly the same way”.  Like flowers, each of us grow and “bloom” in unique ways.  Like snowflakes, each of us is unique and wonderful! Peacemaker Challenge: Remember that ALL classmates, all teachers, all staff, and all people have wonderful things about them...no matter how different they are than you.  No ONE person is better than the other, rather we ALL have great things to contribute to our school and the world.

Jan. 27: Review of the month's concepts, and the notion that, in spite of our differences, we are the same in many ways. We all have feelings, want to have friends, be loved and have fun.  And most of all, we ALL belong to ONE family, the human family.  Peacemaker Challenge: Remember that being different is awesome and, although we are different in many ways, we are the same in many ways too.  Be kind and respectful to ALL people, because they are a part of your human family.

Report Cards
Report cards were released on PowerSchool at 2:45 PM today.  As a reminder, we no longer print report cards.  To access your child's report card online, log into the PowerSchool Parent Portal and you will see a Report Cards icon in the left hand pane.  When you click on this icon your child's report card will appear on the screen.  You can scroll to see the entire report card and choose to print it, if you'd like.

Spelling Bee Winners
Congratulations to all of the participants in the Memorial School Spelling Bee!

Fourth graders  Brady Visaggio, Brady Proulx, Addison Kenney, Madison Gookin, Saijun Rousseau, Abegayle McCay, Sarah Winslow, Marinos Sideris, Adam Prendible, and Alex Pascu participated in the final rounds of the Spelling Bee. They all did an awesome job!
Special congratulations to our first place finisher, Brady Visaggio and to our runner-up, Saijun Rousseau.

Heritage Day
This week, students and staff at Memorial School celebrated Heritage Day. It was great to see everyone wearing clothing representing their cultures, flags, hats and the pride on the children's faces. At our all-school meeting, students sang along to a song, listened to a story, and talked about tolerance and the beauty and diversity of our human family. Students may have questions about their families and people around the world when they get home. This is a wonderful opportunity for discussion and for them to feel pride in their family and heritage.

Guidance Message
Week of January 16:
Jan. 18: Phrase of the Day:  “You are valuable.  Don't let anyone make you feel differently.” Helen Keller became the first deaf and blind person to graduate from college. Her differences are what made her successful and special.  Our differences are our opportunity to do great things. Our differences can become our strengths. Peacemaker Challenge: Don't let others keep you from believing you are valuable.  If anyone puts you down because you are different in some way, remind yourself that your differences are your strengths.

Jan. 20: Phrase of the Day: “Each one, teach one.” Each of us is good at some things and not very good at other things.  We can learn from each other by teaching our strengths to others and having others teach their strengths to us.  This sharing of strengths brings us together as a human family.  Peacemaker Challenge: Think about what are YOU good at, what you can teach others, and what you can learn from them.  If someone wants your help to learn something, teach them.

Heritage Day
Tuesday, January 24th is Heritage Day at Memorial!  Students are invited to wear clothing (shirts, hats, pins, etc) to represent where in the world they are from.  They could even bring in a flag, or wear colors to represent a flag that shows where their ancestors came from.

Guidance Message
Week of January 9:
Jan. 11: Phrase of the Day: “Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.” (Oscar Wilde) The most valuable things in the world are originals, not copies.  Peacemaker Challenge: Like who you are, be YOU, not a copy of others, and remember that your differences are what make you “an original”.
Jan. 13: Martin Luther King Jr. was a hero because of the ways he was different.  He peacefully stood up for equal rights when others didn't.  He was one-of-a-kind.  Peacemaker Challenge: Think of the ways YOU are different and one-of-a-kind. How can those things make you an even better person than you are now?

Guidance Message
January Word of the Month: Tolerance
For the month of January, announcements and classroom visits will focus on Tolerance, the concept of valuing all people and treating them with respect.  Students will be encouraged to not only learn to accept differences, but to understand that they are what make us all unique and valuable.  Students will be challenged to look within themselves, to discover their uniqueness and “wonder” as a person.

Week of January 3:
Jan. 4:  Introduction to the meaning of Tolerance. Tolerance is when we not only accept differences, but we celebrate them.  Tolerant people understand that being different is what makes the world an interesting place.  Tolerant people treat all others with respect, even if they think, act or look differently. Peacemaker Challenge: To be kind to all people, no matter how different they are.
Jan. 6: Phrase of the Day:  “It's GREAT to be different!” Some of the most valuable things in the world are one-of-a-kind.  The Seven Natural Wonders of the World are “wonders” because they are one-of-a-kind. It is the differences in us that make us special. Peacemaker Challenge: Think of ways you are different that make YOU a WONDER.
