Principal's Notes September 2nd

Dear Memorial Families,
We have had a wonderful full week of school. Each morning as I am out on the playground with the children, I am amazed at how well they play together and always find something to do. The most joyous part is seeing how happy they are to be at school. I hope you and your family have a great long weekend.

August Word of the Month: Peace

Week of August 29:
August 30:  Peacemaker Challenge: Listen to your teachers so you will know how to follow rules and do the work.  If we don’t listen, we miss things, don’t know what to do, get confused, and don’t feel good about ourselves.  By listening to our teachers, we are taking care of ourselves, so we can learn, and taking care of others, so we can get along.

September 2: Introduction to the Word of the Month for September, Respect. Respect means we treat others the way we want to be treated.  It means we listen to them, so they feel heard and cared for.  Peacemaker Challenge: Listen to others, so they feel heard and cared for.

PM Dismissal (K through Grade 4) - Important Information
Parking is at a premium at Memorial. This is a change from our practice from last year. The change is made in order to insure that there is adequate access to our building in case of emergency. For afternoon pick-up please park ONLY in designated spaces. This means no parking around the island or in the fire zones.  If there are no spaces available, please park over at the church.  I have asked staff to park in the back of the building leaving open as many spaces as possible out front. Thank you for your understanding.

Volunteer Opportunities
If you are interested in volunteering at Memorial Elementary School, this is a reminder to please fill out and sign the Volunteer Program packet that went home with your child last week.  Even if you've volunteered in the past, these forms need to be filled out and signed every year.
This week a PTG donation envelope was sent home with your child.  If you are unable to physically help out, a financial donation will be gladly accepted.  PTG is also accepting donations via PayPal at www.bedfordptg.org
The volunteers at our schools play such a vital role in our children's education.  Many of the PTG supported opportunities available at Memorial School, such as the Fall & Spring Book Fairs, It's a G.A.S. (Great Artist Series), & Math Superstars, are completely dependent on the generous time donated by volunteers.  Most of the volunteer opportunities need a coordinator (or point person) to facilitate these programs.
As volunteers and coordinators move on with their 4th graders out of Memorial, those positions must be filled in order to continue all these great programs.
Please click this Sign Up Genius link to find out what is currently available.  For more information, and answers to questions you may have, please attend the Volunteer Welcome Coffee on Friday, September 16, at 9:30 AM in the Memorial School library.
If you have questions but are unable to attend the Welcome Coffee, please contact
Barbara Hardy, Volunteer Coordinator at barbara.hardy.volunteer@gmail.com

PTG Greetings
Back to school greetings from the PTG! We are looking forward to another great school year full of fantastic programs and events for our students, staff and families. We are happy to announce that we are now accepting donations via PAYPAL. For more information on our programming or to make a donation online visit our website at www.bedfordptg.org. With your support we are able to put $70,000/year in programs and events into our schools!! Enjoy the long Labor Day weekend ahead.

Also, Hannaford Helps Reusable Bag Program. Hannaford Bedford stores on Kilton Road and Jenkins Road will donate the proceeds of bags purchased to the Bedford PTG for the entire month of September!

NEW NEWS

Guidance Message
Each week I will share the messages that we share with your children in hopes that you can reinforce them at home.

August Word of the Month: Peace

August 25: Mrs. Souza and I welcomed our Memorial family back, with a special welcome to new students and staff. We shared our goal to continue practicing peace and kindness in our school, so that ALL students and staff feel safe and comfortable, and so that we can have fun too.  We defined peace as “taking care of ourselves, others, and the earth”, and peacemakers as people who practice peace each day.  Throughout the year, Mrs. Pleat will offer ideas on how we can become peacemakers, called Peacemaker Challenges.  When we all work together to become peacemakers, our school can be even more fun and friendly than it already is.

August 26: Mrs. Pleat reminded us that peace means “taking care of ourselves, others, and the earth”.  She discussed our new Buddy Bench, and proposed our first Peacemaker Challenge.
Peacemaker Challenge:  If you see someone on the Buddy Bench, ask them to play and be kind to them.  If no one is there, look around for kids who are alone, or new kids, and invite them to play.

AM Drop-Off (Kindergarten through Grade 4)
If you drop your child off at school in the morning (7:30 am to 8:00 am), please make sure you are in the drop-off lane to drop at the front door or park in a marked parking spot and walk your child in. After 8:00 am, you must park in a marked parking spot and bring your child into the building. Thanks for your help in keeping everyone safe!

8/8/16

Dear Memorial Families,

I hope you and your family are having a wonderful summer! The weather certainly has been cooperating. We are just finishing up summer school this week and have been very busy planning for the opening of school. With the start of school coming up quickly, I wanted to just send a few quick reminders:

  • Meet and Greet is August 24th. Grades 1-4 are from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm, K-am is from 1:30 - 2:15, and K-pm is from 2:15 - 3:00.
  • First Day of School - August 25th.

  • If you ordered the PTG School Supply Packs, they have been delivered to your child's classroom. If you need a list of supplies to purchase, please check out your teacher's website or we have lists in the office.
  • The Memorial School Student Handbook is available on Memorial's website under school info.
Looking forward to seeing you all soon. Enjoy your summertime!

Pam

Guidance Messages
Words of the Month for June: Fairness and Cooperation
June 7: Cooperation Phrase of the day: “We should not only use the brains WE have, but all that we can borrow.” (Woodrow Wilson). Some of the greatest achievements are those created from many brains working together.  In school, we need to work together so that all are able to learn and grow.
June 10:  Review of all Words of the Month/Character Traits.  Phrase of the day: “Character is defined as what we do when we think no one is looking.”  It is what we do when no one is looking that counts.  It takes a long time to grow into a person with all the character traits.  Keep practicing!
June 14: Final words and request to spread peace and kindness wherever they go.

Grade 3 Families - Third Grade BBQ
We hope to see you all at the Third Grade BBQ. Please park at the church across the street. There is limited parking at Memorial. Thanks for your help with this.

Grade 4 Families - Clap - Out for our Fourth Graders
Fourth Grade parents/ guardians, please join us on Wednesday, June 15th to clap our our fourth graders. If there are no parking spots available here, please park at the church across the street … they are great neighbors!

Accessing Report Cards in PowerSchool Parent Portal
Student report cards are now available online in the PowerSchool Parent Access Portal. For quarter 3, you received a printed copy of the report card in addition to online access.  The final quarter 4 report cards will be published online only.
A letter was sent home in March that provided the information needed to create your PowerSchool account and link your account to your child.  If you have not set-up your account , we are re-sending the access letter with the password on Monday. Please look for it in a sealed envelop in your child’s backback.
To access your child's report card online, log into the PowerSchool Parent Portal and you will see a Report Cards icon in the left hand pane. When you click on this icon your child's report card will appear on the screen. You can scroll to see the entire report card and choose to print it, if you'd like. Anytime you click on the Report Cards icon, the most recent report card will generate.

Based on parent feedback, the Bedford PTG has partnered with SchoolKidz, a Staples Company, to provide parents a convenient, easy and economical way to order their students' school supplies for the upcoming school year.  CLICK HERE for more information and school account codes. Senior Clap Out
We had our 1st annual Senior Clap Out yesterday for former Memorial students.  It was wonderful to have the BHS Seniors walk through the school and playground. Both the seniors and the staff had such fond memories and the children love seeing the seniors - what a great time!!!

From the Superintendent:

School Lunch Price Increase
We want to make sure families are aware that we need to increase prices of school lunches for the coming year.  For the 2016-17 school year, elementary lunch will cost $2.65 and middle and high school lunch will cost $3.25.
Four Way Stops on County Road to Continue
The intersections at Nashua Road and County Road in front of Bedford High School and at Liberty Hill Road and County Road in front of McKelvie School will remain 4-way stop intersections through the end of the school year.  On May 25, Bedford Police Department met with the school district, the Department of Public Works and our engineering consultant and decided to extend the temporary change.  More information can be found at the Bedford Police Department website.

Tree Clearing and Other Summer Construction Projects
The Bedford School District completes significant maintenance projects every summer. McKelvie is having an older section of roof replaced and getting an upgrade to two student bathrooms in need of replacement.  At Peter Woodbury, the parking lot is being replaced and traffic flow is being reconfigured.  You may notice this project in late June or early July when the trees in front of Peter Woodbury are removed to make way for the expanded parking lot.
