September 18: Introduction of the phrase good face, good voice, good words.  We are respectful when we address someone with a kind face, a caring tone of voice and kind words.  When we have a good face, good voice, and good words, even when things aren’t going our way, we are being respectful, and others will respond more positively to us.

BackPack Safety Awareness
The American Occupational Therapy Association in conjunction with OT’s around the country are partnering to spread awareness of backpack safety.  As children and students head back to class whether preschool or the college campus backpack safety must be reviewed.  Here are some tips to consider:

Size:  Make sure your child’s backpack fits them correctly.  It should fit comfortably over the shoulder, using the  straps to adjust its placement to  sit near the hip bones, two inches above the waist.  Too many students have their backpacks hanging off one shoulder and do not adjust the straps to hold the heavy load comfortably.

Weight:  Your child’s backpack should not weigh more than 10-15% of your child’s body weight.  if your child weighs 100 pounds that means his/her backpack can weigh 15 pounds tops.  If your child weighs 50 pounds it can only weigh 7.5 pounds.  Adjust accordingly!

Straps:  Wide, cushioned shoulder straps are best and make sure your child uses both of them to evenly distribute the load.  Make sure they buckle the waist strap to help distribute the load.

Load it properly:  Show your child how to put the heaviest items closest to their back with lighter items farther out.  Make sure they lift properly as well...using their legs to assist as much as possible.  young backs are growing and we don’t need injuries!

Heavy Load??  Consider alternatives such as rolling backpacks or purchasing two copies of a heavy textbook to leave one at home!

Taking action to reduce the risk of backpack injuries is important!  if you have questions please do not hesitate to contact the OT staff at school.  We would be more than happy to assist!

Smarter Balanced Assessment Results
Last spring, schools throughout New Hampshire (and in many other states around the country) administered a new test known as "Smarter Balanced."  The tests, in language arts and math, were taken by students in grades 3 through 8 and grade 11.  They are computer-based tests that replaced the annual NECAP assessment.
We have recently learned that the public release of the assessment results will occur in November.  This is a later release date than originally announced.  The delay was caused, in part, by the need to hand score those few tests that were taken using paper and pencil.  The results will include both school and state-wide summaries and individual student level results.  We will send more information as it becomes available to us.

Principals' Note - September 11th

Dear Memorial Families,
As we reflect on September 11th and how precious and short life can be, we want to thank you for the time you have given us with your children. Your children have been wonderful during this really hot spell! The change in weather today will make the classrooms more comfortable and it looks like the weather for next week is more seasonal. The heat has been challenging but both the teachers and students have been awesome dealing with it.

NEW NEWS

Guidance Messages
Week of September 8:
September 8:  Review of “putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes”. When we notice someone is in a difficult situation, we can figure out what we can do by putting ourselves in that person’s shoes.  For example, if a student drops his/her lunch tray, we know we might feel embarrassed, and that helping to clean it up would help the person to feel better.
September 11: Reinforcement of “putting ourselves in another person’s shoes”, through a story about a boy who helped another.  Peacemaker Challenge: To put oneself in another person’s shoes.

PRINCIPAL-PARENT COMMUNICATION
Just a reminder that I am sending you an email update every week.  The email will include action items (highlighted in yellow), reminders, and other important information. Parents, we need your help.  It is vital that you review these principal notes each week and take action on the action items.

Principal's Note - September 4th

Dear Memorial Families,
Wow, what a hot week! What was really impressive is how hard the students worked even with their classrooms being very warm. We did do indoor recess on Thursday because of the intense heat and humidity.  I hope you have a wonderful holiday weekend.

NEW NEWS

Guidance Messages
Twice a week throughout the year, with the help of students and our counselor, Mrs. Pleat, we have morning announcements.  Morning announcements are intended to reinforce components of our guidance curriculum.  During the announcements, students learn about our “word of the month”.  Many times, a phrase for the day or week will be introduced, or a Peacemaker Challenge will be presented.  The words of the month, phrases, and challenges help students grow in positive ways.  Central to our guidance curriculum is the concept of peace.  Peace is defined as “taking care of ourselves, others and the earth”.
By talking with your child at home about these character-building concepts, and by role modeling them yourself, you can help your child to internalize them and carry them throughout his/her life.  Thank you for supporting us in this endeavor!
In last week's announcements Mrs. Souza, Mrs. Pleat and I introduced the definition of peace, and challenged the children to invite new students to play.  This coming week, Mrs. Pleat will introduce the word for September, Respect.  She will discuss treating others the way we want to be treated, by being kind, helpful and inclusive.  Empathy will be encouraged through the idea of “putting ourselves in someone else's shoes”.  When we think about how we might feel in a given situation, it can help us decide which actions are okay and which we should refrain from doing.

PTG Support Envelopes & Volunteer Forms
The Bedford Parent Teacher Group (PTG) sent your child home with Support Envelopes and Volunteer Forms this week.  If these did not make it to your kitchen counter, please check the backpacks!  Your financial support is appreciated and greatly needed in order to fund the various educational programs provided to the Bedford School District through the Bedford PTG. Simply complete the front side of the envelope and enclose your tax-deductible contribution.
No contribution is too small nor is it too large!
The on-line (PayPal) system is not available this year.  Our goal is to streamline this process to an online program for next year.  Forms are also available on our website at
www.bedfordptg.org.
If you are interested in volunteering at school, please complete the volunteer form and send it back to school with your child.
Returning the support envelopes and volunteer forms by Friday, September 11th will be greatly appreciated.  Let’s all help to make the “P” significant in the Bedford PTG.
Thank you in advance for your support.  Any questions, please contact the Bedford PTG.
