Principal's Notes - September 30th

Dear Memorial Families,
You can certainly feel fall in the air. The children have really enjoyed being outside during this weather. Stay dry this weekend ... we really do need the rain.

NEW NEWS

Guidance Message
Week of September 26:
September 28: Another way to be respectful is to respect our earth.  We can do that by reusing, recycling and throwing trash where it belongs. Peacemaker Challenge: Recycle our markers, by placing them in the bin in the front hallway.

September 30: Review of the month’s announcements. Peacemaker Challenge: Practice respect every day so you will get into the habit of being respectful.

Destination Imagination - Registration Closing Thursday, October 6th, 2016
Anyone still interested in participating in Destination Imagination this year must register their child by Thursday, October 6th with our DI Coordinator.  To learn more about the program and how to provide your child with this enrichment opportunity, please contact Marie Russell at bedfordrocksdi@gmail.com.

Dismissals from School
If you are dismissing your child from school or there are changes in how your child is getting home, please call the office to insure that the teacher gets the message about the dismissal.
Teachers have been instructed not to pick up the phone during instruction therefore they may not get your message. In addition, many times teachers are not able to check their email until after school. Thanks for your understanding.

Memorial Clothing
You can order Memorial School clothing online!  Please go to www.bedfordwear.com.  Hover over Schools in the menu bar, and select Memorial School.  An order typically takes 7-10 business days to be delivered.  You can order in a variety of colors and styles.  We have a few samples in the office area so you can get an idea of what is offered.  Also, there is a size chart on the website for your reference.  10% of profits come back to the Memorial.

Notes from the Nurse:
My name is Anna Cook. I am the new school nurse. Please feel free to contact me
with any questions or concerns. I can be reached at 627-1776 extension 23204 as
well as via email cooka@sau25.net

Medication in school
Students may have medications in school, given from the health office, with the
necessary paperwork. This paperwork includes a new doctor‛s order each school
year as well as signed parent permission. Medication brought in by parent must be
in labeled container. Please remember to check expiration dates on medication
labels and bring in up to date medications.

Breakfast, lunch & snack and hydration
It is important for students to fuel their bodies in the morning with a healthy
breakfast to start their school day. It is also important to send your child with a
water bottle each day as well as a healthy snack and lunch.

Illness or communicable diseases
Please do not send your child to school if they have been ill with a fever or vomiting within the last 24 hours. If your child has been diagnosed with a communicable disease, such as chicken pox, please inform the school nurse. Please also notify nurse if your child has strep throat. The child should stay home on antibiotics and fever free for at least 24 hours. This is very important because some students must notify their doctor of any exposures. It is
helpful to inform nurse on absentee line as to what symptoms your child is exhibiting. The nurse tracks trends of illness to help keep school healthy.

Pediculosis
The AAP (American Association of Pediatrics) no longer recommends mass
screening for head lice. Since most cases are found by parents, here is some
information to help you determine if your child has head lice. The primary symptom of head lice is an intense itching, caused by louse bites to the scalp. The areas of the scalp most affected are the nape (back) of the neck and behind the ears. Adult lice are grayish brown wingless insects that are as tiny as a sesame seed. They shy away from light and are very hard to see. Nits (eggs) are tiny but they are firmly glued to the hair shaft, most often near the scalp. They appear as shiny whitish ovals. Their centers get darker as they mature.
After they hatch, empty nit casings look transparent. Nits hatch in just 7-10 days. To check for nits, use natural light or bright light. Begin by lifting and separating hairs behind the ears and at the nape of the neck. It is virtually impossible to remove nits from hair without a fine tooth comb or by pulling with tweezers, unlike dandruff. If you suspect your child does have head lice, notify the school nurse for verification and treat with an over the counter treatment recommended by your doctor. Your child will also need to be checked by the school nurse prior to returning to class.

Immunizations and Physicals
The New Hampshire state law requires written documentation of vaccines being up
to date and on file in the nurse's office as well a physical on file at the start of
preschool, start of kindergarten and if new student to school. See the NH
Department of Health and Human Services web site for more information at:
http://www.dhhs.nh.gov/dph/immunizations/school.htm

Health Screening
The school nurse conducts vision and hearing screenings each school year. Grade 1
will have both hearing and vision screening. Grade 2nd and 4th will have vision
screenings. The 3rd grade will have hearing screenings. If you have a concern
about your child's vision or hearing please contact the health office. If you do not
want your child screened please contact the health office.

I am enjoying meeting your children and look forward to the school year ahead.
Please stop in to say hello.

Thanks,
Anna Cook

School Nurse

Principal's Notes - September 23rd

Dear Memorial Families,
We had our first Dance Party with the Principal this week. All students who read and recorded their reading over the summer came down to the cafeteria and danced with Janice Souza and me. I will share that the students are much better dancers than I am. They did say that they had a good time! It looks like we may have our first fall weekend that I hope you and your family enjoy.

NEW NEWS

Guidance Message
Week of September 19:
September 21:  It is important to be kind and respectful to all people, even if their appearances, talents, ideas, cultures, and ways of living are different than ours. All people are a mixture of things they are good at, and things that can be improved.  Peacemaker Challenge: Respect all people, even if they are different than you.

September 23: It’s important to respect ourselves too.  We shouldn’t listen to the “Green Monster” in our head. The Green Monster is the part of our brain that thinks negative things about ourselves.  If we listen to that voice, it can become louder.  Instead, we need to say nice things to ourselves, especially when we make a mistake.  Peacemaker Challenge: IGNORE what the Green Monster in your head says.  Instead, think only good things about yourself.  Say those good things EVERY DAY.

Community Council
I meet each month with a group of parents and a Memorial teacher to talk about issues and projects at Memorial School. One project this year will be to decide on signage for the front of the school. We will also be discussing if we want to have a yearbook. We are seeking two parents to join our group. We will meet the fourth Tuesday of each month at 8AM. If you have an interest in joining us, please email me at ilgp@sau25.net.

Dismissal and Parking
We are maintaining our current practice of going to the church once the Memorial parking spaces are full.We are continuing to discuss how to handle parent-pick-up at the end of the school day.  We are particularly concerned with inclement weather ... stay tuned!
