Volunteers Needed for Field Day 2016!
This year Field Day will be on Thursday, June 2nd. This fun-filled day is quickly approaching and we are in need of some enthusiastic volunteers to help facilitate all the activities planned. School Supplies for School Year 2016 - 2017
Pre-Order your child’s school supplies for next year through the Bedford PTG and SchoolKidz, a Staples Company. Order forms for students entering Kindergarten through 8th grade will be going home with your student in the next week. This year we are offering pre-packaged grade level specific supply lists, name brand supplies at competitive prices and online ordering (no shipping fees). Coffee with Superintendent McGee and School Board Chair Bill Kassler
Please join the Bedford PTG at our last coffee with Superintendent Chip McGee and School Board Chairperson, Bill Kassler on Thursday, June 2nd at BCTV @ 9:30a.m.. There will be a short presentation followed by a Q&A. This is a great opportunity to hear what’s happening at the district level and ask questions. Four Way Stops on County Road to Continue
The intersections at Nashua Road and County Road in front of Bedford High School and at Liberty Hill Road and County Road in front of McKelvie School will remain 4-way stop intersections through the end of the school year. On May 25, Bedford Police Department met with the school district, the Department of Public Works and our engineering consultant and decided to extend the temporary change. Tree Clearing and Other Summer Construction Projects
The Bedford School District completes significant maintenance projects every summer. McKelvie is having an older section of roof replaced and getting an upgrade to two student bathrooms in need of replacement. At Peter Woodbury, the parking lot is being replaced and traffic flow is being reconfigured. You may notice this project in late June or early July when the trees in front of Peter Woodbury are removed to make way for the expanded parking lot.

Friends of Aine Kid’s Try-athlon - August 14, 2016
Registration is now open for the 4th Annual Friends of Aine Kid’s Try-athlon to be held on Sunday, August 14, 2016. The only event of its kind in the area, the kid’s try-athlon is designed specifically for children ages 4-15 years, in memory of Aine Phillips, who was a student at Riddle Brook School. Beginning at the Bedford town pool and ending at the Bedford High School, participants ages 4-10 years will swim 25 yards, run 1/2 mile and bike 1 mile. Older participants ages 11-15 will swim 50 yards, run 1 mile and bike 2 miles. Official race times for all participants are recorded by Millennium Running. At the finish line, families are invited to enjoy music, a jump rope event, face painting, concessions, raffle prizes and more! The Friends of Aine Foundation is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization and was established in Aine’s memory to help grieving children. Spanish Summer Camp
Students entering 2nd grade-8th grade will be exposed to Spanish in fun immersive language environment on July 11th-14th from 8:00am-11:30am at Bedford High School. There will be different themes each day taught by highly trained and certified teachers with teenaged team leaders. Students will be in appropriate age and ability groupings. Camp Invention
Does your child like to take things apart, and design, color and create? Are you interested in unlocking your child's potential this summer? Camp Invention, EPIC (click for video)may be a great fit. McKelvie Intermediate School will, once again, be hosting camp June 20 - 24 from 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM. Camp Invention is the only nationally acclaimed summer enrichment day experience for children entering grades 1 – 6, led by NH certified teachers with a staff ratio of 1:8!! REMINDERS
Health Office Update
As the warmer weather approaches, it is a good time to review some general health and safety issues for both school and home.
-Spring time allergies – the pollen is here. If your child suffers from allergies it is now time to start using their allergy medications. Remind your child to wash his/her hands and face when coming in from outdoors. This will help remove any pollen that has settled on them. It is also important to take off sweatshirts or jackets worn outside for the same reasons. Taking a shower or bath before bed will also help them sleep better.
-Ticks are here. It’s a good idea to check your child’s clothing and head for ticks after playing outdoors. If you find a tick, the best way to remove it is with tweezers. Using alcohol or vaseline generally makes them dig deeper into the skin. After removing, clean the area with soap and water and apply a small amount of antibiotic ointment. Follow up by calling your health care provider and let them know of the tick removal (saving the tick can sometimes be useful). Keep checking the site for several days to ensure no infection has developed. If rash develops contact your health provider.
-With spring, we also see more falls, causing minor cuts and abrasions.
Remind your child that it’s very important for them to come in and have it cleaned properly and a Band-Aid applied. Band-Aid applied at school should be removed at night and area should be washed. Allowing area to air dry will allow wound to scab over.
-Sandals are great for summer, but wearing them to school increases the chances for playground injuries. Jumping rope, climbing on the jungle gym, and general running and playing are best done in sneakers.
-With the warmer weather coming you may want to consider putting sunscreen on your child before coming to school. Although recess is limited to a half hour, the sun is very strong at that time of day. Hats are a great idea, as well.
-Please remember to have your child drink plenty of water. Many headaches and stomachaches are due to lack of fluids.
-Please remind your child to pack a healthy snack, many are forgetting them.
-Many severe head injuries can be prevented with the use of bike helmets.
Helmets need to fit and be worn correctly to obtain its full protection. Please
review bike safety rules with your family and insist on them wearing a helmet when biking, skateboarding and or rollerblading.
