Guidance Messages
Week of December 14:
December 15: Phrase of the day: “Anger is only one letter short of Danger”.  If we do things when we  are very angry, we might break the Anger Rules.  The Anger Rules state that it's okay to be angry, but it's not okay to hurt ourselves, others, or property.  Anger that breaks the Anger Rules is called Dirty Anger.  When we cool off and wait for our anger to decrease or subside before acting, we don't hurt others, and have Clean Anger.
December 18: Phrase of the Day: “Life is full of choices.  Choose carefully.”
We can make choices that are good for us and others, or ones that hurt ourselves and others. When we control our anger and other feelings, we make positive choices and feel proud.

“Stuff the Turkey” - Monday is the last day!
Please help us help those in need by donating non-perishable goods to our food drive. This year all the food collected will go to a local food pantry. We are hoping to generously stock it for our Bedford families. The children have been so excited seeing the boxes be filled.

REMINDERS

Parking Spaces
We have some good news!  On a temporary basis, parents and visitors are again allowed to park in the informal spots in front of Memorial.  A big thank you to the Town of Bedford Department of Public Works and the Police Department for allowing this flexibility.  The small amount of soil and new grass should not be a problem, but it may be a little muddy on wet days (as it was before, of course).  A team from the Department of Public Works, the Police Department and the School District will be working together in the meantime to figure out a plan for the future.

Ski Program - Pats Peak
Bedford students in grades 1 – 12 are invited to take advantage of discounted ski/snowboard lessons at Pat’s Peak Ski Area in Henniker, NH.  This parent run program is geared to give kids the opportunity to learn to ski and snowboard at a ski area perfect for all levels.  This five-week Friday night program includes 1-hour lessons and free ski time until closing each week and costs less than the price of a regular lift ticket.  Discounted lift tickets are available for students who do not need lessons.  The 2016 Bedford Ski Program begins on Friday, January 8th and runs for 5 weeks.  Go to www.patspeak.com.  Click on “Learn to Ski & Ride Program”, “Register Here”.  The username for the 3:30 lesson is bedfordski330 and for the 4:30 lesson the username is bedfordski430.  The password is “carpool”.  More details are available at www.patspeak.com.  Please contact Carolyn John at ekkoswife@comcast.net if you have questions.

Principals' Notes - December 4th

Dear Memorial Families,
It is impressive to see how hard the children are working. This morning I was visiting a third grade classroom that was working on persuasive writing. They asked for my feedback on their initial ideas which I found very thoughtful. They are trying to persuade me to support a Before School Program. You would have been impressed with their arguments … I was. I am looking forward to their final proposal. One of the greatest joys of the principalship is to see the children so actively involved in learning.

NEW NEWS

Guidance Messages
Phrase of the Month:  Managing our Feelings
During the month of December, Mrs. Pleat will talk about feelings. Classroom visits and morning announcements will center around types of feelings and how we can safely and appropriately handle them.  The students will also learn more about our school-wide initiative called Zones of Regulation.  Zones Of Regulation helps children to recognize and regulate their feelings throughout the day.
Announcements:
Week of December 1:
December 1: Introduction to the month and announcement about our Stuff the Turkey Food Drive.
December 4: Review of Zones of Regulation:  When we are in the Green Zone, we are feeling happy and ready to learn.  Our body has just the right amount of energy.   When we are in the Blue Zone, we are sad, tired, sick or bored.  We don't have enough energy in our bodies.  When we are in the Yellow Zone, our bodies have a little too much energy.  This could be because we are excited, frustrated, worried or annoyed.  While in the Yellow Zone, we may lose some control.  When we are in the Red Zone, we are very angry, mean or terrified.  Our bodies have too much energy and we are out of control.  When we are not in the Green Zone, our goal is to get into the Green Zone or control ourselves while in another zone.

Holiday Assistance
The holidays are fast approaching and the excitement is building, as we look forward to happy celebrations with family and friends. This is a busy time for many of us, and children can sometimes become overwhelmed. Eating a healthy diet, getting extra sleep and having some quiet time may help your child to stay healthier.
As your School Nurse and School Counselor, we recognize that holiday anticipation may not be joyful for all students and families, and instead brings stress, fear and even sadness.  As always, our school community is here to assist you, if needed.   Please let us know if you are in need of assistance.  Through the generous donations of others in our school community, we can help.  If you know someone that may be having difficulty, please encourage them to let us know.  All assistance is confidentially given.  We hope that all Memorial children who celebrate this time of year can experience wonderful memories to share with friends and family.
Please consider helping if you can.
Families could use gift cards, or if you would like to purchase something for a child in need,  please click here.  What a wonderful gift you are teaching your own children!  Donations may also be sent to the nurse’s office.

Happy Holidays to all!

Sincerely,
Rachel Higgins, RN       and    Lisa Pleat, School Counselor
