Principals' Notes - November 20th

Dear Memorial Families,
We had such fun at Math and Literacy Night, reading The Mitten, playing math games, melting Ice for a prize, doing “Frozen Karaoke”, making snow, doing Pebble Go and playing chess. The children as always were excited about the Cake Walk … special thanks to all of our families for their generous donations of cakes. It was wonderful seeing so many of our families at either Math and Literacy or parent conferences.

Memorial’s Chorus Schedule Change
Chorus practice will be on Tuesday, November 24th because there is no school on Thursday. We will be back to our Thursday schedule in December. For planning purposes, the winter concert will be in January.

Memorial Annual Food Drive - “Stuff the Turkey”
November is our Month of Kindness and Gratitude.  One way we would like to practice these important traits is by sponsoring our annual food drive.  From November 18 to December 21, Memorial School will be conducting a non-perishable "Stuff the Turkey" Food Drive.  We are especially excited this year since, for the first time, our proceeds will go directly to a Bedford pantry, with the purpose of serving Bedford families. We have the unique opportunity of helping the newly created Food Pantry at Presbyterian Church, which plans to open for the upcoming holiday season. (Once a location outside of the church is found, the pantry will become the Bedford Community Food Pantry.)  We will greatly appreciate any donations you are able to give, to get the pantry started. Items such as canned proteins (meats, fish, vegetables, etc.), pasta, peanut butter, jelly, rice, flour, sugar and cereal are especially needed.  If you would like to join us in helping our new Bedford pantry, please send the items into school with your child.  If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Pleat, X3206.  Thanks for helping us support Bedford families!

Holiday Assistance
The holiday season is approaching and the excitement is building, as we look forward to happy celebrations with family and friends. This is a busy time for many of us, and children can sometimes become overwhelmed. Eating a healthy diet, getting extra sleep and having some quiet time may help your child to stay healthier.
As your School Nurse and School Counselor, we recognize that holiday anticipation may not be joyful for all students and families, and instead brings stress, fear and even sadness.  As always, our school community is here to assist you, if needed.   Please let us know if you are in need of assistance.  Through the generous donations of others in our school community, we can help.  If you know someone that may be having difficulty, please encourage them to let us know.  All assistance is confidentially given.  We hope that all Memorial children who celebrate this time of year can experience wonderful memories to share with friends and family.
For those families who would like to help support us during this time of the year, we truly appreciate your generosity.  What a wonderful gift you are teaching your own children!  Donations may be sent into the nurse’s office.

Happy Holidays to all!

Sincerely,
Rachel Higgins, RN       and    Lisa Pleat, School Counselor

We have some good news!  On a temporary basis, parents and visitors are again allowed to park in the informal spots in front of Memorial.  A big thank you to the Town of Bedford Department of Public Works and the Police Department for allowing this flexibility.  The small amount of soil and new grass should not be a problem, but it may be a little muddy on wet days (as it was before, of course).  A team from the Department of Public Works, the Police Department and the School District will be working together in the meantime to figure out a plan for the future.

Pincipals 'Notes - November 6th

Dear Memorial Families,
What an incredible weather week … it is hard to remember that it is November! On Thursday our third and fourth graders had a wonderful message about the ABCs of Bullying from Firefly, one of the Harlem Globetrotters. If you have a third or fourth grader, please ask them about this assembly. In a fun-filled way, it reinforced what we teach about the importance of kindness.

NEW NEWS

Guidance Messages
Week of November 2:
Nov. 6: Mrs. Pleat will build upon last month's themes of Responsibility and being a bully-free school of Upstanders.  The words of the month are Kindness and Gratitude.  The students will learn that Kindness and Gratitude are the “cures” for bullying and unkind behavior.  Each morning, students will be encouraged to perform a Kindness Challenge.  The Challenge will give them an opportunity to experience the joy of giving and acting in kind ways.  We hope they will discover the “magic” of kindness as it gives both, the giver and receiver positive feelings, and it can create a climate of harmony, happiness and peace.  Students will learn that “It's COOL to be kind.”
Kindness Challenge: Say “good morning” to someone new.

Bedford Substance Abuse Summit
In response to the threat posed to our community by the substance abuse epidemic, the Bedford Police Department in conjunction with the Bedford School District will host a community-wide meeting on Tuesday, November 10th from 7P to 10P at the Manchester Christian Church, 56 Old Bedford Road, Bedford (across from Memorial School).  We want to thank Manchester Christian Church for graciously donating the use of their facility for this important endeavor.

The goal is to involve individuals and groups from throughout our community.  The focus is to first de-stigmatize this issue to encourage parent(s), student(s), loved one(s), friends and family to seek assistance for not only those suffering from substance abuse but also for guidance in education and treatment (agenda).  To accomplish this, we plan to have some gallant members of the community discuss their struggle with abuse in their families followed by a panel discussion and, most importantly, community engagement that we hope will lead to an action plan.

Anyone seeking more information about the meeting may contact the Police Department or the Superintendent's Office in person, by telephone or email.  On behalf of the Bedford Police Department and the Bedford School District, we want to thank you all for your assistance and whatever level of participation you are able to offer.
